The ignition control module on a 2001 Chevrolet S10 with a 4.3-liter V-6 is mounted to a bracket on the ignition coil. The ICM is a minimal control device, unlike earlier models. Its function is to ground the negative side of the coil in accordance to signals from the computer, which controls all timing changes. A failing ICM can be changed with limited tools.
Instructions
- 1
Locate the coil and ICM at the rear of the intake manifold. Disconnect the electrical plug from the ICM by lifting up slightly on the tab and pulling it out. Remove the two screws securing the ICM to its mounting bracket, using a nut driver. Pull the ICM off the bracket.
2Apply the dielectric grease that accompanies the new module on the metal back of the module. This helps dissipate the heat.
3Align the module with the holes in the mounting bracket and install the two retaining screws. Push the electrical plug into the ICM's socket.
