How to Change an Ignition Lock in a 1999 Ford Taurus

Changing the ignition lock on a 1999 Ford Taurus is as simple as it gets. The ignition lock cylinder operates a rod that runs down to the ignition switch on the top of the lower steering column under the dash. It pushes or pulls the rod as the key is turned. At the same time, it pushes a rod up through the steering wheel locking plate when the switch is in the "off" position. This prevents the steering wheel from being turned.

Instructions

    1

Install the memory saver in the cigarette lighter if the memory for the radio or GPS needs to be protected. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery using a wrench. Insert the key into the lock and turn the key to the "Run" position.

    2

Insert the drill in the hole directly under the key tumbler. Look for the small hole in the plastic cover under the tumbler. The tumbler has a spring-loaded pin that needs to be pushed up to release the key tumbler. Push up on the pin and pull the key tumbler out of the column with a small twist in either direction.

    3

Install the new key tumbler by turning the key to the "Accessory" position. Notice the small raised tract on the top of the tumbler. Align this tract with the same shape recess in the column and push it in. Turn the key to the "Run" position and then to the "Off" position and remove the key. Try the key to make sure it works properly.
