How do I Repair an Auto Radiator Leak?

A radiator is in constant contact with road particles that can cause it's metal core to wear down over time, resulting in leaks. Leaks in a radiator can also lead to other serious problems for your vehicle. When a leak is discovered, information on how to repair it can be beneficial.

Identification

A puddle of greenish liquid underneath your vehicle is often the initial sign that your radiator has a leak. However, if you park in grassy areas, this can be easily overlooked. Because of this, keeping tabs on your coolant level is the ideal way to identify an auto radiator leak.

Solution

A radiator leak can be plugged with a number of products, such as Loctite, J-B, or Scotch epoxy weld hardening products. Upon finding the location of the leak, drainage of the radiator will be needed along with a thorough cleaning of the leak's general area. J-B Weld, for example, can then be applied, and takes nearly two hours to harden and seal the leak.

Consideration

There are instances when an auto radiator's leak stems from damage so severe, it's basically beyond repair. In these cases, it's advisable to consider the purchase of a new radiator.
