Transmission Cooler A/C Condenser Conversion

Transmission Cooler A/C Condenser Conversion

The transmission fluid in a motor vehicle keeps the transmission running smoothly. Too much heat causes the fluid to lose its effectiveness, which results in transmission damage. A solution is the installation of a transmission cooler, which provides additional protection. An alternative is to convert the A/C, or air conditioner, condenser so it serves as a transmission cooler.

Function

The function of a transmission cooler is to extend the life of the transmission. It accomplishes this by lowering the temperature of the transmission fluid. In most automobiles the transmission fluid goes through the radiator, which cools the fluid. Under normal circumstances this cooling is sufficient. If it keeps the fluid at a temperature no greater than 170 F, the system functions well. The transmission fluid needs additional cooling when the engine works hard; towing a trailer is a good example. If you notice your transmission fluid is leaking, that is a sign it is overheating. The answer is installation of a transmission cooler; the fluid is routed through this device for additional cooling.

Purpose

Automobile air conditioners use refrigerant that enters the condenser. The purpose of the condenser is to alter the refrigerant's form from a vapor to a liquid. The condenser is next to the radiator and resembles it with its tubing. Air flows through the condenser as the automobile moves. The air removes heat from the refrigerant, which lowers its temperature and allows it to become a liquid.

Alternative

Instead of installing a new part in your engine you can convert your existing air conditioning condenser to a transmission cooler. This eliminates any concern about finding the cooler that fits in the existing space under the hood. The conversion process involves routing the transmission fluid through the condenser through the use of transmission cooler hoses. The process can allow you to save money.

Drawback

Converting your condenser means it cannot be used for its intended purpose. You will no longer have air conditioning. Conversion is only a viable option if your air conditioner system does not work and you will not fix it. It may be too expensive or impractical for repair. The other reason would be if you do not use the air conditioning and thus the condenser is of no current use.
