How to Replace the Headlight Assembly on a 2003 Volvo V70

The Volvo S70 was introduced in 1997. The 2003 Volvo S70 was equipped with a 2.3-liter, in-line five-cylinder engine in the base model. Two versions of a 2.4-liter, turbocharged, in-line five-cylinder engine were available as an upgrade. The 2003 Volvo S70 had a dual bulb headlight system, which involves a high- and low-beam bulb in one assembly. Replacing the headlights requires little mechanical knowledge; it should take about an hour to complete the process on both sides of the car.

Instructions

    1

Raise the hood on the V70 and locate the two mounting bolts for each headlight assembly. Both mounting bolts for the headlights are mounted through the radiator core support, about 1 1/2-inches behind the top of the headlight lens. The inner sides (toward the center of the car) of each headlight assembly have a bolt almost directly behind the assembly. These are bolts for the grille, and should not be removed.

    2

Remove the headlight assembly mounting bolts for one headlight assembly, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the assembly forward over the bumper, and rest the assembly against your knee for support. Remove the locking collars from the back of the headlights by turning them counterclockwise with your hand.

    3

Remove the outermost bulb and socket (closest to the fender) by turning it counterclockwise slightly, then pulling it horizontally out of the assembly. Pull up the locking tab on the bulb socket to release the bulb, then pull the bulb out of the socket. Wrap an H7SU bulb in a paper towel. Install the H7SU bulb into this socket and press it in until it snaps in place. Install the bulb and socket back into the rear of the headlamp assembly.

    4

Remove the innermost (toward the grille) bulb and socket by turning the socket counterclockwise slightly. Pull the bulb out of the assembly horizontally. Pull up on the tab on the socket, and pull the bulb from the socket. Wrap a 9005SU bulb in a paper towel and insert the bulb into the socket. Install the bulb and socket back into the assembly and turn the parts clockwise to lock them in place.

    5

Slide the plastic locking collars back over both headlight sockets and turn them clockwise to lock them. Install the entire assembly back into the front of the vehicle and tighten the mounting bolts with a ratchet and socket. Do not torque the bolts, or you will break the plastic headlight mounting tabs.

    6

Repeat Steps 2 through 5 to complete the replacement on the other side of the vehicle.
