Despite its small size, the compact 1991 Honda Civic Hatchback was marketed as a car with surprisingly good storage space. Unfortunately, the car's large rear hatchback window is at risk for damage. A compromised hatchback window can lead to water leaks and make the Civic an easy target for thieves. Fortunately, you can replace the rear hatchback window on your 1991 Honda Civic if it becomes compromised. The job requires only a few basic tools, a new window and a helper.
Instructions
- 1
Use the pry tool to remove any rubber that remains on the outside of the window. The window may be sealed from the outside with a rubber rim or gasket.
2Disconnect the wire harness of the rear window wiper, if the Civic is equipped with a rear wiper. Remove the wiper arm by lifting the cap at the base of the arm and removing the bolt that connects the arm.
3Run the blade of a thin knife between the window and the body of the vehicle. This will break the urethane adhesive seal between the vehicle's body and the glass. Have a helper hold the window in place so the window does not fall out of the vehicle. Remove the old window.
4Clean the window mounting area of any old adhesive with a pry tool. Brush a thin layer of urethane adhesive primer on the mounting surface area. Clean the contact area of the new window.
5Bead a constant line of urethane adhesive to the mounting surface of the vehicle. With your helper, carefully place the new window onto the mount. When the window is in place, raise the hatchback door and let the adhesive cure.
6Reinstall the rubber rim around the new window. Re-install accessories the rear window wiper and the wiper's electrical harness, if necessary.
