How to Remove a Rear Wiper Motor From a 2003 Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 is a crossover vehicle that first became available in 2002. The 2003 Volvo XC90 was equipped with a 2.5-liter turbocharged in-line five-cylinder engine as the base engine for the 2.5T and 2.5T AWD models. The 2002 XC90 T6 AWD received a 2.9-liter non-turbo in-line six-cylinder engine. The 2003 XC90 was produced with both front and rear wipers. The rear wiper motor is located on the rear tailgate of the XC90, underneath the lower trim panel.

Instructions

    1

Remove the plastic cover from the base of the wiper arm, using a flat-head screwdriver if needed. Remove the wiper arm mounting nut, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the wiper arm off the tailgate, using a battery terminal removal tool if needed.

    2

Open the tailgate of the XC90. Remove the four screws from the sides and bottom of the panel, with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the lower panel by pulling it away from the tailgate, starting at the top window end and working downward. There are eight hidden body clips. Use a panel clip tool to assist in removing the tailgate lower panel if needed.

    3

Disconnect the electrical connector from the wiper motor, by hand. Remove the wiper motor and assembly mounting screws, using a ratchet and socket. Remove the wiper motor from the vehicle.

    4

Install the new motor and assembly into the tailgate of the XC90. Tighten the mounting screws snug, using a ratchet and socket. Install the lower trim panel onto the tailgate, making sure the body pins are lined up correctly. Push the lower trim panel onto the tailgate, making sure that all eight covered clips mount to the body of the tailgate. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the clips in place if needed. Install the panel from the bottom upward. Install and tighten the four mounting screws snug.

    5

Align the wiper arm about 10 mm down from the top edge of the blackened rear glass section. Install the mounting nut over the pivot and tighten the nut to 11 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket. Install the plastic cover by hand once you have installed the rear wiper arm.
