When the Focus arrived as the eventual replacement for the Escort in 2000, some buyers assumed it was an all-new model for Ford. This is untrue, however, as the Focus made its debut in the European market in 1998. The 2008 Focus, with its newly redesigned exterior, came in either a four-door sedan or a two-door coupe; and interestingly, this was the first year for which a hatchback was not made available. Replacing the rear speakers in the 2008 Focus coupe involves removing the large trim panel covering the inner part of the quarter panel.
Instructions
Removal
- 1
Pry the bolt cover -- the small circular cover -- from the C-pillar trim panel with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the C-pillar trim panel bolt with a ratchet and socket. Pull the C-pillar trim panel outward sharply to disengage its retaining clips and remove it.
2Remove the scuff plate trim panel -- the panel spanning the length of the bottom of the doorjamb -- by prying it upward with a flat-head screwdriver to disengage its retaining clips, then pulling it off the doorjamb.
3Fold the rear seat backrests downward and unfasten the Velcro that secures the carpet on the lower, outside corner of each backrest, exposing the rear seat backrest hinges. Remove the two backrest-to-hinge bolts on each backrest with a ratchet and socket.
4Slide the drivers side backrest toward the drivers side of the vehicle to disengage it from the pivot shaft and remove the backrest from the Focus. Repeat this step on the passengers side backrest, but slide it toward the passengers side to disengage it from the pivot shaft.
5Pry upward on the seatbelt retractor bezel -- the trim piece that the seatbelt goes behind -- with a flat-head screwdriver to free it from the quarter panel trim. Remove the seatbelt retractor bezel.
6Pull outward around the perimeter of the quarter panel trim panel with your hands to disengage its retaining clips. Remove the quarter panel trim from the Focus, exposing the speaker behind it, and set it in a safe area.
7Remove the four screws securing the rear speaker, using a Phillips screwdriver, and pull the speaker outward until you can access its wiring harness. Pull the wiring harness from the speaker with a slight wiggling motion, then remove the speaker.
8Repeat Steps 1 through 7 to remove the rear speaker on the other side of the Focus.
Installation
- 9
Plug the wiring harness into the speaker and set the speaker in its hole. Tighten the four speaker-retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
10Position the quarter panel trim on the inside of the Focus, lining up its retaining clips with the slots in the Focuss quarter panel. Press the quarter panel trim onto the quarter panel until the retaining clips snap into place.
11Set the seatbelt retractor bezel back in place on top of the quarter panel, lining up its retaining clips with the slots on top of the quarter panel trim. Press the bezel downward to lock it in place.
12Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to install the other rear speaker and quarter panel trim.
13Slide the rear seat backrests onto their respective pivot shafts. Line up the holes in the backrest hinges with the holes in the backrests and hand-thread the backrest-to-hinge bolts; torque the bolts to 21 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket. Fold the seat backrests up until they lock into place.
14Reinstall the scuff plate trim by lining up its retaining clips with the slots on the bottom of the doorjamb. Press downward on the scuff plate trim to lock it into place. Repeat this step on the other side of the Focus.
15Line up the clips on the rear of the C-pillar trim panel with the slots in the C-pillar, then press the trim panel toward the C-pillar until the clips snap into place. Hand-thread the C-pillar trim panel bolt, then snug it with a ratchet and socket. Press the plastic bolt cover back in place over the C-pillar trim panels retaining bolt. Repeat this step to install the C-pillar panel on the other side of the vehicle.
