How to Remove the Power Mirror on a 2001 Ford Taurus

The 2001 model-year Ford Taurus redesign heralded its fourth generation. The 2001 model offered more room and a more familiar look for sedan buyers, featuring more squared-off design cues than those of the third-generation model Taurus. While Ford offered new features to Taurus buyers in 2001, the car retained many old features, including the optional power mirror. This feature allows drivers to quickly and easily adjust the door mirror without having to open the window or touch the mirror glass itself. Should the mirror fail, you'll need to remove and replace it to return those power conveniences.

Instructions

    1

Open the Taurus's driver door. Remove the two screws directly below the door pull with the Phillips screwdriver.

    2

Remove the five screws around the door panel's perimeter from the leading edge, across the bottom and on the trailing edge, using the Phillips screwdriver.

    3

Pull the door panel off the door, beginning at the bottom and working upward to release the door panel trim pins from the door skin. Pull the inner door handle to release it from the panel and then lift the panel up and off the door. Set the panel on the floor next to the door.

    4

Unplug the power mirror from the door harness. Remove the three power mirror retaining nuts using the socket wrench and 13 mm socket.

    5

Move to the outside of the door and firmly grasp the old power mirror. Pull the mirror outward, away from the door until the three mounting studs clear the door's A-pillar. Set the old power mirror aside.

    6

Slide the Taurus's new power mirror onto the door's A-pillar taking care to guide the wiring connector through the door so it does not incur damage. Move to the inside of the door, and install the three power mirror retaining nuts using the socket wrench and socket. Plug the power mirror wiring connector into the door harness.

    7

Place the door panel back onto the door, guiding the inner door handle through the panel. Push the panel directly onto the door to snap the trim pins back into the door skin.

    8

Reinstall the five perimeter screws into the door panel using the Phillips screwdriver. Reinstall the two screws below the inner door pull with the screwdriver. Close the Taurus's door.
