The Millenia was initially intended to become the flagship sedan for the Amati line of vehicles -- Mazda's prospective luxury lineup -- but the Amati line never came to be, due to financial hardships. Instead of scrapping the Millenia along with the Amati line, Mazda added the luxury sedan to its lineup in 1995. The 1995 Millenia came standard with a six-speaker, AM-FM, cassette audio system, and had an optional CD-changer available. Replacing the Millenia's stereo requires a special tool, but is rather simple once you have the tool.
Instructions
- 1
Look on the far left and far right of the radio unit, and find the plastic plugs covering the two small holes on either side of the radio. Insert the blade of a small flat-head screwdriver under one hole cover, and pry it out of the hole -- repeat this process to remove all four hole covers. If the radio has a CD-changer, there are eight covers to pry out.
2Line the straight ends of two Mazda radio removal tools up with the two holes on either side of the radio. Insert the radio removal tools about one inch into the holes. If your Millenia has a CD-changer, you need four radio removal tools, as the CD-changer has four holes, too.
3Press the curved ends of the Mazda radio removal tools outward to release the locking tabs holding the radio in the dash -- you cannot see the tabs, so you must do this by feel. While holding outward pressure, pull the radio removal tools toward you to slide the radio out of its dashboard chassis. You might need to repeat Steps 2 and 3 several times, as the tools sometimes lose their grip as you pull.
4Remove the Mazda radio removal tools once you see the radio locking tabs clear the dashboard. Pull the radio outward until you can reach the wiring on the rear of it.
5Press and hold the locking button on each wiring harness, and pull each harness from the rear of the radio with a slight rocking motion. Pull the antenna wire from the rear of the radio, using a slight wiggling motion. Remove the radio from the Millenia.
6Plug the wiring harnesses into the replacement radio until they click into place. Press the plug at the end of the antenna wire into the antenna receptacle on the rear of the radio.
7Slide the radio and its wiring into the radio chassis in the dashboard, and press the radio into the chassis until the locking tabs click into place. Press the hole covers back into the four holes on the left and right of the radio unit.
8Find you factory four-digit radio security code, or the one included with the replacement radio. If you have lost the code, or the radio did not come with one, see your local Mazda dealer with the vehicle identification number and the radio's serial number to obtain a new code.
9Turn the Millenia's ignition to the "Run" position, but don't start the engine. Turn the radio on and observe as "Code" blinks on the radio's screen. Press the "Search" and "Auto-M" buttons simultaneously, and observe as "Code" stops blinking and becomes solid.
10Enter your four-digit radio code using the preset buttons on the radio, then press the "Search" and "Auto-M" buttons simultaneously. Listen for a loud beep indicating you have reactivated the radio. If you do not hear a beep, repeat Steps 9 and 10.
11Turn the ignition to the "Off" position.
