How to Install a Window Regulator in a 2002 Ford Focus

The front window regulators on a 2002 Ford Focus are of the dual-post cross-cable design: One continuous cable crosses from one upright channel, with rollers on both ends, to another similar channel, in a crisscross pattern. The window supports are attached to the cable on the side of each post. The motor causes the cable to rotate in either direction. Crisscrossing causes the cable on both posts to move in the same direction, up or down.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal, using a socket. Place the small common screwdriver in the small hole in the pull strap on the door panel, and pry the trim cover off. Remove the two Phillips screws located behind the trim cover.

    2

Remove the screw located in the front of the inside door handle (this screw secures the handle to the door). Remove the two screws on all three sides of the door panel, using the Phillips screwdriver. Insert the small screwdriver under the rear of the window switch and pry it upwards (it is just snapped into the door panel). Disconnect the electrical plug on the back of the switch.

    3

Pull the door panel away from the door, enough to access the back of the panel, and remove the speaker, using the screwdriver. Peal the moisture shield back, exposing the access opening in the door. Disconnect the window motor harness connector.

    4

Push the Phillips screwdriver down, between the window and top of the door, just enough to wedge the window so that it won't fall as the regulator is removed. Loosen the bolts in the left window lift clamp, using a socket; do the same on the opposite side -- you will see the metal square on each post that supports the window.

    5

Remove all the bolts retaining the window regulator and motor -- there are two in each post, and three in the motor. Remove the regulator through the access hole.

    6

Install the window regulator through the access hole. Align the holes in the posts and install the bolts and tighten them firmly. Install the bolts in the window motor. Plug the electrical harness connector into the motor.

    7

Hold the window and pull the screwdriver out of the door. Lower the window down until it contacts the window lift brackets. Push the window down slightly into the brackets. Tighten the clamp bolts in these brackets to hold the window tightly.

    8

Install the moisture shield in its original position. Hold the door panel close to the door and install the speaker. Push the window switch wiring up through the hole in the panel. Hook the door panel onto the top door sill and swing it down into position. Install all the screws into the sides of the door panel, the grab handle and door handle. Install the trim cover over the grab handle.
