How to Install Transmission Mounts in 1998 Sunfires

The 1998 Pontiac Sunfire base model came with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission. Over time, the transmission mount becomes weak and needs to be replaced. The transmission mount will need to be replaced if the rubber bushing inside the mount has separated from the mount or when there is movement in the mount when pushing on the transmission case. Replacement of the transmission mount requires removing the driver side wheel and splash shield for access.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Break loose the lug nuts on the driver's side wheel with the lug wrench. Lift the vehicle into the air with the floor jack. Place the jack stands under the front frame rails of the vehicle. Lower the floor jack until the vehicle rests securely on the jack stands.

    2

Remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench and remove the wheel from the vehicle.

    3

Remove the four bolts securing the splash shield to the fender with the socket and ratchet. Remove the two bolts securing the splash shield to the front frame rail of the vehicle. Remove the splash shield from the vehicle.

    4

Place the floor jack under the transmission and lift the transmission slightly to remove any stress from the transmission mount. Remove the bolts securing the transmission mount to the transmission and the bolts securing the transmission mount to the front frame of the vehicle. Remove the transmission mount from the vehicle.

Installation

    5

Place the transmission mount into position on the transmission and the frame. Hand tighten the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 44 foot-pounds of torque with the torque wrench.

    6

Lower the floor jack so that the transmission rests at its normal position and remove the floor jack.

    7

Hold the splash shield in place and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts with the socket and ratchet.

    8

Place the wheel onto the vehicle and hand tighten the lug nuts.

    9

Lift the vehicle off the jack stands with the floor jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to the ground.

    10

Tighten the lug nuts, in a crisscross pattern, to 100 foot-pounds torque with the torque wrench.
