How to Change the Ignition Module in a 1998 F-150

The 1998 Ford F-150 was equipped with a 4.2-liter V-6 in the base, two-wheel drive model and produced 210 horsepower and 255 foot-pounds of torque. The ignition module or coil pack provides the spark to the plugs. The spark in the ignition coil is controlled by the engine control module. Bad ignition coils can cause issues with the engine running and idling. Replacing the ignition coil requires removal of other engine components.

Instructions

    1

Raise the hood on the F-150. Remove the negative battery cable from the battery using a ratchet and socket. Tuck the cable to the side of the battery, so there is no accidental contact during this procedure.

    2

Place tabs of masking tape on each of the spark plug wires on the ignition coil. Mark the tabs of tape corresponding with the numbers on the top of the ignition coil. It is essential that all of the plug wires go back onto the ignition coil in the exact position they came off the old coil.

    3

Remove the ignition coil wire from the ignition coil by hand. Disconnect the electrical connector from the side of the coil. Squeeze the tabs on the sides of each spark plug wires and remove them from the top of the ignition coil. Remove the mounting nuts from the ignition coil using a ratchet and socket. Remove the throttle cable mounting bracket with a ratchet and socket and place it aside. Remove the radio interference wire from the coil by hand. Remove the ignition coil from the engine.

    4

Install the new ignition coil on the engine mounting bracket. Install the radio interference wire onto the ignition coil. Tighten the mounting nuts between 78 and 91 inch-pounds using a 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench and socket. Install the throttle cable mounting bracket on the engine and tighten the nut and bolt to the same torque specifications.

    5

Install the ignition coil wire onto the new coil. Install the electrical connector on the side of the coil. Install the spark plug wires onto the new coil by hand, exactly as they were removed from the old coil. Remove the masking tape tabs from the wires.

    6

Install the negative battery cable onto the battery and tighten it snug with a ratchet and socket.
