DIY Eclipse Headliner

The headliner of your Mitsubishi Eclipse is not necessary for driving the vehicle, but an Eclipse with a damaged or missing headliner is not very attractive. For aesthetic purposes, replace a damaged headliner or install a better-looking headliner into your Eclipse. The procedure can be completed in a short time with the appropriate tools.

Instructions

    1

Park the Eclipse and turn the engine off.

    2

Remove the frame around the headliner using a flathead screwdriver. It will pry off with a bit of effort.

    3

Remove the screws from the dome light plastic with a Phillips screwdriver. Pry the dome lights off the ceiling with a flathead screwdriver. Disconnect the light assembly's electrical wiring connector and remove it from the ceiling. Remove any other ceiling hardware, such as coat hooks.

    4

Remove the old headliner from the vehicle. You may need to rip the headliner off due to the old adhesive.

    5

Push the new headliner onto the ceiling of the Eclipse to make sure it fits. Cut off any excess headliner material with the knife to ensure a snug fit.

    6

Spray the headliner adhesive all over the board and attach the headliner to the Eclipse by pushing it onto the ceiling of the vehicle. Start at the front of the vehicle and work your way backwards. The front of the headliner must be installed correctly because of the dome light. Hold the headliner in place for thirty seconds to make sure the adhesive holds. If the headliner falls, add more adhesive and try again. Press carefully to avoid forming any bubbles. If bubbles form, carefully smooth them out by pushing them towards the edge of the headliner using your hand.

    7

Reattach the light assembly and screws. Snap the headliner frame back into place. Replace any ceiling hardware you removed.
