Without a functional water pump, your Chevy will have to sit. The water pump is directly responsible for circulating the coolant throughout the engine. If the water pump is not operating correctly, the engine will overheat. If you do not repair it in a timely manner, the problems will only get worse, and the repairs become more expensive including head gasket failure and the engine potentially seizing. It is not necessary to take your car to the repair shop, because this is a project that you can do yourself.
Instructions
- 1
Remove the negative terminal from the battery using a wrench to loosen the nut. Open the valve on the bottom of the radiator with a wrench and drain the coolant into the drain pan.
2Loosen the bolts on the water pump pulley using a wrench. Lift the accessory belt off the water pump pulley. Take the bolts out of the water pump pulley and pull it out of the engine compartment. Loosen the hose clamp on the water pump hose and pull it off the pump.
3Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a socket and ratchet. Pull the water pump away from the engine. Clean any remaining gasket material away from the mounting surface using a scraper tool.
4Place a new gasket and the water pump on the engine and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet. Connect the hose to the water pump and tighten the clamp with the screwdriver.
5Place the water pump pulley on the pump and loosely install the bolts. Place the accessory belt over the water pump pulley and tighten the bolts with the wrench.
6Refill the radiator and reservoir with coolant. Start the car and check the system for leaking.
