How to Use RTV Instead of Loctite 592

Loctite 592 is a thread sealer used in connecting pipes or to secure bolts and screws in areas of vibration such as on a motorcycle or a boat motor. RTV is a silicon sealant that can be used in the same areas as Loctite. RTV is a room temperature vulcanizing gasket compound and sealant. You can make customized gaskets for engine parts with RTV or use it as a sealant on any type of threads that make a junction with another component.

Instructions

    1

Spray brake cleaner onto the pieces to be joined. Clean all grease and debris from the surface, and spray both the male and female threads of a pipe junction. Likewise, spray a bolt or screw threads and the orifice it will fit into. Spray the surfaces until the brake cleaner runs off and is clear. Allow the brake cleaner to air dry entirely.

    2

Cut the tip off a tube of RTV silicone sealant at a 45-degree angle.

    3

Squeeze the tube to apply the sealant on the threads of the male pipe fitting, bolt or screw. Skip the first thread near the end of the pipe, bolt or screw and apply the sealant in a continuous bead around each additional thread. Press the tip of the tube down into the threads to completely fill them with sealant.

    4

Fit the two pieces together and secure them with the appropriate tools. Use adjustable wrenches to connect pipe fittings and bolts and a screwdriver to install a screw. Allow the sealant to cure for 24 hours for the best results.
