How to Replace an Impala's BCM

The body control module, or BCM, on the Chevrolet Impala is located under the driver's side dash. While it's a simple replacement, getting to it can be difficult because of its location. The BCM needs to be reprogrammed for your specific vehicle; the dealership can program the VIN and other information into the body control module for you. The body control module controls chassis electrical components, such as the lights, among several other things.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative battery cable using the appropriate wrench. Set the cable aside, ensuring it does not touch metal.

    2

Position the back of the driver's seat as far back as it goes. Cover the top of the seat with a towel. If you have a tilt wheel, tilt the steering wheel all the way up. Lie on the seat with your head and shoulders on the floor and your feet over the top of the seat --- this is more comfortable than trying to lie half in the car.

    3

Locate the body control module --- it is a black plastic box with three large wiring harness connectors. Ground yourself by touching metal, to dissipate any static electricity. Remove the wiring harness connectors from the BCM. Depending on the year Impala, they may be held on with clips, or may have a bolt in the center of each connector. Remove the bolt with the appropriate socket, if applicable, then pull off the connectors.

    4

Remove the retaining bolts using the appropriate socket. Remove the BCM from the vehicle.

    5

Install the new BCM and tighten the bolts firmly. Do not over-tighten the bolts. Plug in the wiring harness connectors. Reattach the negative battery cable. Take the vehicle to the dealership to have the BCM programmed.
