The brake pads on a 2001 Honda Accord are made of a soft, semi-metallic material and require periodic replacement due to wear. The average interval between brake pad changes can range from 25,000 to 35,000 miles, depending on your driving habits. Heavy stop-and-go traffic or heavy loads can lower the interval between brake jobs. The brake pads on a 2001 Honda Accord are relatively easy to replace and the task can be completed with basic hand tools.
Instructions
- 1
Loosen, but do not remove, the lug nuts from the front wheels, using a ratchet and socket.
Jack up the front of the Honda Accord and secure it with jack stands.
Remove the front lug nuts and pull the wheels from the vehicle.
Look at the rear of the brake caliper and locate the two caliper bolts, one upper and one lower.
Loosen, but do not remove, the upper caliper bolt, using a ratchet and socket. This remains as a pivot point for the caliper.
Loose and remove the lower caliper bolt with a ratchet and socket. Pivot the caliper upward to exposes the old brake pads.
Grasp the brake pads and pull them from the brake assembly. Take note of the way the old pads came off, as the new ones must go on in the same direction.
Position the C-clamp over the caliper so that the fixed portion of the clamp is touching the rear of the caliper body and the screw portion is contacting the internal caliper piston. Tighten the C-clamp until the piston is fully pressed into the caliper body.
Loosen and remove the C-clamp from the caliper.
Place the new brake pads on the brake system in the same manner that you removed the old ones.
Swing the caliper downward and over the new brake pads.
Hand-tighten the upper and lower caliper bolts.
Tighten the caliper bolts to 36 foot-pounds of torque, using a torque wrench and socket.
Repeat steps 4 through 13 for the brake pads on the other side of the Accord.
Place the wheels back on the vehicle and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
Lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the lug nuts to 80 foot-pounds of torque, using the torque wrench and a socket.
Press and release the brake pedal repeatedly until it feels firm.
