How to Remove an Early Bronco Vent Window

Early Ford Broncos featured a vent window and a main window on both the drivers and passengers side of the truck. Unlike the main window, which contacts weather stripping on the body of the vehicle, the vent window contacts weather stripping in its own frame. To replace the vent windows weather stripping, the window must first be removed. Removal is fairly simple, but the door panel must be removed to access the vent windows retaining nut from within the door.

Instructions

    1

Remove the window crank handle, the arm rest and the interior door handle. Both the window crank and the interior door handle are held in place with a single Phillips screw. Remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver, then pull the crank and the handle off of the door panel. Behind the crank and the handle, resting against the door panel, is a large plastic washer. Slide the washer off the crank and handle gears and set the washer aside. Remove the two bolts located underneath the armrest with a socket wrench to remove it.

    2

Remove the door panel. The door panel is held in place with a number of metal clips located along the interior corners of the panel. Wrap the blade of a flat-head screwdriver with masking tape to prevent scratching the door frame, then insert the screwdriver between the door panel and the door frame. Starting at one edge of the door panel, use the screwdriver to pry the panel away from the door until the clip disengages from the door frame. Pull the door panel off the door frame when all of the clips have been disconnected from the frame.

    3

Open the vent window and roll the main window all the way up.

    4

Remove the single nut located at the base of the vent window with a wrench from inside the door.

    5

Grasp the vent window with both hands, then press down firmly on the window. At the base of the vent window is a large spring. Pressing down on the window will compress the spring. At the top of the vent window is a vertical metal pillar, which slides into the vent windows frame. Push down on the window until the spring is compressed enough so that the metal pillar clears the window frame, then move the window to the side and pull it out of the door.
