How to Remove a CRV Damper

The 2006 Honda CRV 2.0-liter engine damper requires special tools for removal and installation. These tools are available at Honda dealerships and some auto parts stores. It is pertinent that you ensure the engine is at top dead center before removing the damper, and keep the engine on top dead center while completing the job. The damper rarely malfunctions, but if it does, make sure the crankshaft snout has not been damaged before installing the new damper. You also have to remove the damper to replace a timing belt.

Instructions

    1

Ensure that you have the radio security code. If you do not have it, contact the dealership to get the code. Be prepared to show ownership of the vehicle -- they will ask you for the VIN number.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery cable, using the appropriate wrench. Set it aside, ensuring that it does not touch metal. Raise the vehicle with the floor jack and support it with jack stands. Remove the lower engine splash shield, using the appropriate socket. Mark the direction of rotation of all the accessory belts, if you are reusing the belts.

    3

Loosen the upper pivot nut and lower lock nut on the power steering pump bracket. Insert the -inch breaker bar into the square hole in the pump, located near the upper pivot bolt. Move the pump toward the engine to loosen tension on the belt. Remove the belt.

    4

Loosen the pivot bolt on the idler pulley bracket for the air conditioning belt. Loosen the lock nut on the adjusting bolt. Turn the adjusting bolt counterclockwise to loosen tension on the air conditioning belt. Remove the belt.

    5

Loosen the upper lock nut and the lower pivot nut for the alternator belt. Move the top part of the alternator assembly toward the engine to release belt tension. Lift the belt off the pulleys.

    6

Turn the crankshaft, using the appropriate socket, until the white mark is lined up with the mark on the lower timing belt cover to set the engine at top dead center. Hold the crankshaft with the holder attachment and the holder handle. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt by turning it counterclockwise, using the 19 mm deep well socket. Remove the crankshaft damper.
