A broken thermostat in a 1998 Pontiac Transport can result in two different situations. In one situation, the engine can overheat and cost thousands in repair bills. In the second situation, the vehicle will not produce heat, thus it will be unable to heat up the inside of the vehicle. Both situations require a new thermostat installation to correct the issue. Replacing the thermostat in the Transport requires basic hand tools and entry-level knowledge of automotive repair.

Locate the top radiator hose on the Pontiac Transport and trace the hose to where it connects to the engine. The metal housing to which the hose connects is called the thermostat housing.
2Remove the radiator hose from the thermostat housing by loosening the band clamp. To do so, squeeze the two metal tabs together to relieve pressure on the clamp. Pull upward on the hose with the clamp loosened.
3Remove the two bolts that hold the thermostat housing onto the engine block. Lift the thermostat housing off the engine to expose the thermostat.
4Pull the thermostat housing O-ring out of the bottom edge of the thermostat housing and replace it with a new one. The O-ring should be supplied with the thermostat.
5Pull the thermostat out of the engine block and replace it with a new one. The end of the thermostat with the pin sticking out is oriented so the pin sticks out of the engine.
6Place the thermostat housing back onto the engine block and bolt it back into place.
7Slide the radiator hose back onto the thermostat housing and secure it with the retaining clip.
8Start the engine and check for leaks. If leaks occur, check the O-ring for defects. If the O-ring is not defective, make sure the thermostat housing is tightened against the engine block.
