The powertrain control module (PCM) is the electrical computer brain of your car, truck, van or sport utility vehicle. Your vehicle has numerous electrical sensors, like anti-lock brake sensors, oxygen sensors and emissions sensors. All of these individual sensors "report back" or translate this information to the PCM, which in turn, makes the proper adjustments. Changing out a PCM is not difficult. However, when a PCM is swapped out it has to be "formatted," not unlike a computer disc, by a dealer so it will recognize your specific vehicle's sensors. Once that is taken care of by a technician, installing is a straightforward job.
Instructions
- 1
Remove your vehicle's negative battery cable with an adjustable wrench before removing the old PCM.
2Unplug the plastic wiring harness that the old PCM is plugged into.
3Unclasp any bolts or screws on the bracket holding your PCM in place.
4Fit the new PCM back in place and fasten it down with bolts, screws or clamps, depending on the make and model of the vehicle.
5Plug the wiring harness connector into the new PCM and then replace the negative cable.
