How to Change the Thermostat in a Chevy Lumina APV Van

It's important to keep your Chevy Lumina APV Van working properly since your cargo load is most likely a child being carted from one practice to the next. If the cooling system doesn't function correctly, you could be stranded on the side of the road listening to your child discuss the importance of being on time for soccer practice. If you've noticed your engine running hotter then normal or you've noticed that the car doesn't heat up as easily as it used to, then it's time to change out that thermostat.

Instructions

    1

Pull the top radiator hose off the thermostat housing by removing the clip that secures it onto the housing and then pulling the hose off the housing. Lift the hose vertically so the radiator fluid will flow back into the radiator.

    2

Remove the thermostat housing from the Lumina AVP by removing the bolts that hold it in place with a wrench. Pull the housing off the intake manifold and set it off to the side for now.

    3

Pull the thermostat out of the intake manifold and replace it with the new one. The thermostat must be orientated correctly. The end marked as the top should protrude from the thermostat housing.

    4

Pull the old gasket off the intake manifold and replace it with a new one. The gasket should remain dry during the installation process to help prevent leaking.

    5

Place the thermostat housing back into the intake manifold of the Lumina and bolt it back into place.

    6

Slide the radiator hose back onto the thermostat housing and secure it with the clip that holds it onto the hose. You can replace the clip with a band clamp. A band clamp will prevent leaks form the radiator hose.
