How to Change a Starter in a 91 Civic

The 1991 model year was the last year of the boxy body style Civic, as Honda completely revamped the Civic the following year. The 1991 Civic came in three different body styles: sedan, two-door hatch back and a two-door liftback. Honda offered two different engine sizes in the 1991 Civic: a 1.5-liter four-cylinder and a 1.6-liter four-cylinder. The 1.5-liter engine cranked out 62 to 92 horsepower, depending on the trim level. The 1.6-liter engine produced 108 horsepower and only came fitted in the Si and EX trim levels. The process to replace the starter on both engine sizes of the 1991 Civic is the same.

Instructions

    1

Remove the positive and negative battery cables by loosening its retaining bolt, using a combination wrench, and pulling the cables from the battery.

    2

Find the starter, located on the passenger's side of the engine. Remove the nut securing the starter power wire to the starter, using a combination wrench, and pull the wire from the starter.

    3

Pull the starter signal wire from the rear of the starter.

    4

Remove the bolt securing the engine wiring bracket to the top of the starter with a ratchet and socket. Position the wiring out of the way of the starter.

    5

Loosen the two starter bolts, using a combination wrench. Hold the starter with one hand and remove the two bolts with the other. Pull the starter from the transmission bell-housing -- take note of the positioning of the starter as you remove it -- and pull the starter from the engine compartment.

    6

Set a new starter on the transmission's bell-housing in the same position the old starter was in. Hand-tighten the starter bolts into the starter. Torque the starter bolts to 32 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and socket.

    7

Install the starter power wire onto the new starter and tighten the wire-retaining nut with a combination wrench. Press the starter signal wire onto the receptacle on the rear of the starter.

    8

Set the engine wiring bracket on top of the starter and tighten the bracket's bolt with a ratchet and socket.

    9

Reconnect the positive battery cable to the battery and tighten it with a combination wrench. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery and tighten it with a combination wrench.
