How to Change a MAP Sensor on a 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue

The 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue was offered with a 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. The manifold absolute pressure or MAP sensor is located on the intake manifold right above the throttle body. To gain access to the MAP sensor it will be necessary to remove the engine cover. The MAP sensor relays the amount of pressure or vacuum in the intake manifold to the computer and the computer adjusts various components of the engine for the optimal performance and emissions control based in part, on the signal received from the MAP sensor.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Lift the vehicle hood and support it with the hood prop rod. Allow the engine to cool to prevent the possibility of any accidental burning.

    2

Remove the two nuts securing the front of the engine cover to the intake manifold with the socket and ratchet. Lift the front of the cover straight up and pull it toward the front of the vehicle to slide it from under the rear latch.

    3

Pry back on the tab of the MAP sensor electrical connecter and push it off of the plug receptacle on the MAP sensor. Place the flat-head screwdriver between the MAP sensor and the intake manifold and carefully pry it up to remove it from the intake manifold. Remove the MAP sensor from the engine and inspect to make sure the rubber grommet was not left in the MAP sensor mounting hole.

    4

If the rubber grommet did not come out with the MAP sensor, carefully remove it from the mounting hole in the intake manifold with a small pick tool.

Installation

    5

Lightly lubricate the rubber grommet on the new MAP sensor with clean engine oil. Line up the MAP sensor slots with the flat studs on the intake manifold and slide the MAP sensor over the flat studs. Push down on the MAP sensor until it is fully seated in its mounting hole on the intake manifold.

    6

Place a small amount of dielectric grease into the MAP sensor plug or wiring harness. Install the wiring harness into the MAP sensor plug; the tab will click when the harness is properly seated into the MAP sensor plug.

    7

Slide the engine cover under the rear engine cover bracket and pull it down over the mounting studs on the engine. Install the engine cover mounting bolts and tighten to 27 inch-pounds with the inch-pounds torque wrench. Shut the vehicle hood.
