1998 Chrysler Concorde Engine Overheating Repair

1998 Chrysler Concorde Engine Overheating Repair

The 1998 Chrysler Concorde's engine cooling system consists of many switches, sensors and other electrical components. One of the main components is the engine cooling fan assembly. This assembly sits in front of the engine, directly behind the radiator, and pulls cool air through the radiator to lower the coolant's temperature. This assembly is a common cause to a Concorde's engine overheating. Fortunately, this problem is a relatively easy one to fix and does not require many tools.

Instructions

    1

Open the Concorde's hood and locate the hose running into the top of the radiator, this is known as the upper radiator hose. Place the drain pan under the vehicle, directly below the upper radiator house.

    2

Loosen the hose clamp holding the upper radiator hose to the radiator, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the hose from the radiator, a slight twisting motion will aid in the removal. Be prepared to point the hose downward towards the drain pan, as a small flow of coolant will come from the hose. Once the coolant flow has ceased, push the hose to the side.

    3

Disconnect the wiring harness plugging into the top, driver's side of the fan assembly by pressing the locking button and pulling the harness from the fan assembly.

    4

Loosen and remove the four bolts holding the fan assembly in place, using the ratchet and socket. Pull the fan assembly towards the engine, then up and out of the engine compartment.

    5

Place the new fan assembly into the engine compartment and push it towards the radiator. Hand-tighten the four bolts that hold it into place.

    6

Tighten the four bolts holding the fan assembly to 50 inch-pounds, using the torque wrench and a socket. Plug the wiring harness into the receptacle on the top, driver's side of the fan assembly, listen for the clicking sound indicating that it is locked into place.

    7

Press the upper radiator hose back on to the radiator and tighten the hose clamp, using a Phillips screwdriver.

    8

Open the radiator cap and start the Concorde.

    9

Allow the vehicle to reach operating temperature, approximately halfway up the temperature gauge on the dashboard. Add 50/50 premixed coolant until the radiator is full. The coolant level may drop a few times while filling. This is to be expected, simply add coolant to the radiator when this happens.

    10

Close the Concorde's hood and turn off the ignition.

    11

Pour the coolant from the drain pan into the 1-gallon container and take the container to a local auto parts store for recycling or disposal.
