What Is a Radiator Tank?

A vehicle's cooling system is one of its most important because, in order to work efficiently, it must operate at the correct temperature. Engines produce a large amount of heat during its processes, and that heat makes the engine's components liable to damage. The radiator tank is part of the cooling system and its main purpose is to hold the overflowing coolant that has absorbed heat from the engine.

Cooling System

    The cooling system in an engine prevents damage to the engine's components by dissipating heat the engine produces through the coolant. The coolant absorbs the heat as it circulates throughout the engine and it goes to the radiator, where it transfers that heat to the cool air.

    Coolant is a mixture of water and anti-freeze, a chemical solution usually composed of ethylene glycol and various anti-corrosion chemicals. When the coolant is heated, it expands. The radiator tank, also known as an expansion tank, provides extra storage space for the heated coolant.

    Radiator tanks, or expansion tanks, are usually made of plastic and are connected to the radiator by an overflow tube.

    In addition to holding overflowing coolant, the radiator tank also serves the function of removing air bubbles from the coolant. This allows the coolant to absorb heat from the engine more quickly. Further, when a vehicle has an expansion tank, as not all vehicles do, it allows the radiator to be full at all times, provided the expansion tank has a reserve supply of coolant in it.
