How to Replace a Starter Clutch on a GY6

Replacing the starter clutch in the GY6 engine is necessary to keep the starter working properly. The GY6 engine is used primarily in Asian-built scooters and the clutch can wear out over time and prevent the starter from turning. The clutch is located inside the cover on the center shaft and you can replace the part in about an hour with just a few common shop tools, saving you time and money.

Instructions

    1

Place the GY6 starter in a vise and use a socket wrench to unfasten the bolts holding the cover on the part. Remove the cover and unscrew the retaining ring (clockwise) from the center shaft.

    2

Remove the retaining ring and washer and slide the clutch off the center shaft. Place the new clutch on the center shaft by lining up the keyhole on the clutch and sliding the part onto the shaft.

    3

Place the washer and retaining ring on the center shaft and screw the retaining ring counterclockwise onto the shaft to secure the clutch. Secure the GY6 cover plate to the starter with bolts and remove the starter from the vise.
