How to Install a Thermostat on an Integra

How to Install a Thermostat on an Integra

The Integra was a compact sports-coupe manufactured by Honda and sold under their luxury brand name, Acura. The Integra was sold in the United States from 1985 to 2001, when it was replaced by the Acura RSX. Other than paying more for the part, changing the thermostat in an Acura Integra isn't much different than doing so in other vehicles, save for a few details.

Instructions

    1

Park your Integra on a flat surface (asphalt or concrete, preferably) and engage the parking brake for safety. Pop your hood and disconnect your negative battery cable. Let your engine cool for at least 30 minutes.

    2

Remove the engine brush guard from underneath the front part of your engine bay. The brush guard is held on by bolts. Removing it does not require lifting the vehicle.

    3

Place the drain pan under the radiator and remove the drain plug mounted underneath. Let the engine coolant drain into the pan. Keep the coolant away from animals; the sweet smell of antifreeze attracts them, but it is toxic.

    4

Trace the upper radiator hose to the engine to find the thermostat housing. Most vehicles' thermostats are mounted on the radiator, but the Integra thermostat is mounted on the opposite side of the hose, closest to the engine.

    5

Use the pliers to remove the hose clamp from from the upper radiator hose. Disconnect the hose from the thermostat housing. Remove the three bolts mounting the thermostat housing and set the housing aside.

    6

Pull the thermostat and its gasket out of the mount. Discard the old gasket, it is cannot be reused. Place the new gasket and new thermostat in the mount with the bleed valve pointing upwards. Replace the thermostat housing, bolts and upper radiator hose.

    7

Install the drain pan plug on the bottom of the radiator. Use the funnel to replenish the engine coolant. Be careful not to spill any on the ground. Reconnect the negative battery cable and start the engine to check for leaks before replacing the engine brush guard.
