How to Install Shocks on a 2001 Chevy Tracker

When General Motors eliminated Geo from its automotive group in 1998, the popular Tracker SUV moved to Chevrolet's lineup. The 2001 Chevy Tracker came standard with a 127-horsepower, 2.0-liter in-line four-cylinder engine. The compact SUV also came standard with struts on the front suspension and shocks on the rear. Motorist Assurance program recommends replacing the shocks on the 2001 Tracker every 50,000 miles to maintain optimum performance. Replacing the rear shocks on the 2001 is a task that an average do-it-yourself mechanic can complete.

Instructions

    1

Raise the rear of the Tracker and place jack stands under the frame rails. Lower the Tracker onto the jack stands.

    2

Position the floor jack under the center of the rear axle and raise the floor jack until it lightly contacts the axle. This provides support for the axle when you remove the shocks.

    3

Locate the upper shock retaining nut attached to the frame rail, directly above the rear axle underneath the vehicle. Remove the upper retaining nut on the shock using a ratchet and socket, and remove the upper shock bushing and washer.

    4

Remove the nut on the lower shock mount bolt, using a ratchet, socket and combination wrench, and pull the bolt from the lower shock mount. Tap the bolt with a rubber mallet to remove it, if needed. Pull the shock from the Tracker.

    5

Install one upper shock bushing -- included with the shock -- on the upper shock mounting stud and insert the stud into the hole on the frame rail. Set a rubber bushing and washer -- included with the shock -- on the upper shock stud and hand-tighten the upper shock nut.

    6

Line-up the hole in the lower shock mount with the mounting holes on the rear axle. Slide the lower shock mount bolt through the axle and shock and hand-tighten the nut onto the bolt.

    7

Repeat steps 3 through 7 for the shock on the other side of the Tracker.

    8

Raise the Tracker off the jack stands, using a floor jack, and remove the jack stands. Lower the SUV to the ground.
