How to Fix a Flickering HID

A flickering HID, or high-intensity discharge, light can indicate one of two things: either a problem with the light's fuse or an issue with the bulb. In either case, replacing the malfunctioning component will fix the flickering. The fuse is located within your vehicle's fuse block and the bulb is located within the HID light assembly of your vehicle. With most vehicles, you can access these with only a few tools, but you will need to check your vehicle's owner's manual to be sure. The difference between HID bulbs and traditional halogen bulbs is that HID bulbs are much brighter.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of your vehicle and disconnect the battery by using a socket wrench to remove the negative terminal from your vehicle's battery. As HID lights can cause serious injury through electrical shock, it is important that you do not skip this step.

    2

Open the fuse block and remove the HID light fuse using a fuse-puller. Consult the owner's manual of your vehicle for the exact location of the fuse block and the fuse.

    3

Install a replacement fuse and close the fuse block. If the issue persists, you will need to change the bulb.

    4

Remove the wiring connector from the rear of the HID light assembly. If there are screws or bolts securing the assembly to your vehicle's engine compartment, remove them using a Phillips screwdriver or socket wrench.

    5

Pull the bulb out of the assembly.

    6

Install the new bulb, using a clean cloth to handle it. Reattach any screws or bolts and reconnect the wiring connector. Reconnect the battery and close the hood.
