About a Lower Radiator Hose Leak

A lower radiator hose leak can be difficult to find due to the hose's location. However, the leak needs to be found and fixed, as driving a car that is leaking coolant can result in damage that is expensive and difficult to repair.

Finding the Leak

Leaks in a lower radiator hose often drip directly to the ground. When a car is leaking coolant, letting the car idle while sitting over a concrete surface can help you determine where the leak is located. Once the coolant starts dripping onto the ground, look above that area to locate the leak.

Repair

Using a radiator stop leak additive may stop a small leak in a radiator hose. However, this is likely to be a temporary repair. Leaks may occur where the hose attaches to the radiator or engine due to a loosened or damaged clamp. Just tighten or replace the clamp.

Replacement

The lower radiator hose is easy to replace. Using the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator, drain the coolant into a bucket. The lower radiator hose is held in place by two hose clamps that are removed with a screwdriver. Replace the hose, tighten the clamps, and pour coolant back into the radiator.
