How to Replace a Rear Wheel Bearing on a 1995 Dodge Avenger

1995 was the first year for the Dodge Avenger two-door coupe, which was produced until 2000. The Avenger started production again in 2008 as a four-door sedan. The 1995 Avenger was equipped with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder, or optional 2.5-liter V-6 engine. The V-6 engine is sourced from Mitsubishi. The rear wheel bearings on the Avenger are part of the wheel hub, and the hub and bearings are replaced as a unit.

Instructions

    1

Park the Avenger on a level, paved surface. Block the front wheels with wheel chocks. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels. Raise the rear of the Avenger with a jack and support the Avenger with jack stands. Remove the wheels.

    2

Remove the bolt from the anti-lock brakes sensor if equipped with a ratchet and socket and pull the sensor from the knuckle.

    3

Remove the brake drum, or caliper and rotor. Remove the caliper by removing the two bolts from the back of the caliper with a ratchet and socket. Tie the caliper to the strut with a piece of wire. Pull the rotor from the hub.

    4

Remove the four hub bolts from the back of the knuckle with a ratchet and socket. Remove the hub.

    5

Mount a new hub on the knuckle. Install the bolts. Use a torque wrench and socket to torque the bolts to between 54 and 65 foot-pounds.

    6

Install the brake drum or rotor and caliper. For the caliper, install and torque the bolts to between 36 and 43 foot-pounds. Slide the ABS sensor if equipped into the knuckle. Install and tighten the bolt.

    7

Mount the wheels and lug nuts. Raise the Avenger, remove the jack stands and lower the car to the ground. Torque the lug nuts to 95 foot-pounds.
