How to Replace a 94 Mustang Oil Sending Unit

The oil pressure sending unit for the 1994 Ford Mustang is an important warning indicator component, designed to alert the driver if the engine begins to operate with dangerously low oil pressure. When the engine is shut off, the oil pressure switch is in the closed position, which completes the ground circuit for the warning light. When the engine is running with an acceptable amount of oil pressure, the oil pressure switch will rest in the open position, breaking the indicator light's ground connection. Erratic operation of the indicator light may warrant the replacement of the sending unit.

Instructions

    1

Turn off the engine and open the hood.

    2

Allow the engine to cool sufficiently. Do not perform repairs to the engine while it is hot.

    3

Examine the front driver's side portion of the engine near the cylindrical-shaped oil filter and locate the small oil pressure sending unit. The oil pressure sending unit features a single-wire connection and a hexagonal base (see Resources).

    4

Disconnect the single-wire connector from the sending unit.

    5

Unscrew and remove the sending unit using a deep well socket and ratchet or wrench.

    6

Thread the new oil pressure sending unit into the mounting provision by hand; finish tightening the sender using a deep well socket and ratchet or wrench. Do not over-tighten the sending unit.

    7

Connect the single-wire connector to the end of the sending unit.
