How to Replace a 2002 Ford Escape Thermostat

How to Replace a 2002 Ford Escape Thermostat

If your 2002 Ford Escape starts overheating, the thermostat is likely to blame. When the thermostat sticks in the cooling system, it can cause frequent overheating despite normal coolant levels and condition. You can buy a replacement thermostat at an auto parts store and replace it in your garage or driveway for significantly less than a repair center would charge.

Instructions

    1

Remove the cap from the radiator. Place a large drain pan beneath the passenger side of the radiator in the front of the Escape. Open the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator with a wrench. Drain the coolant so it is below the upper radiator hose. Tighten the radiator drain plug.

    2

Trace the upper radiator hose to the five-way hose connection. Remove the bolts securing the connector with a wrench. Remove the thermostat housing from the connector. Pull the O-ring and thermostat from the housing.

    3

Insert the new thermostat in the housing and position the O-ring. Connect the housing to the five-way connector. Seal the connector with the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts with a wrench.

    4

Add a 50-50 blend of coolant and water to the radiator until the level is full. Replace the radiator cap. Start the engine and watch the hose connections for any leaks. Tighten the hoses if needed.
