The rear-view mirror on a 1994 Acura Legend is secured to the windshield with a special rear-view mirror adhesive. This is the only adhesive that will work and may be purchased at most auto parts stores in kit form. A mounting button must be bonded to the windshield to hold the mirror in place. This button must be removed from the mirror base before it can be glued to the windshield. Once the glue has cured, the mirror can be mounted over the button.
Instructions
- 1
Outline the location of the mounting button on the outside of the mirror, using a crayon or wax marker. If the mirror has fallen off, the adhesive will remain on the window, creating an outline. Remove the layer of adhesive on the inside of the windshield, using the flat razor. Do not use any other type of implement to remove the adhesive to avoid damaging the windshield.
2Clean the windshield at the location of the button with alcohol and a clean cloth. Remove the mounting button from the mirror arm. If the mirror is original, it will have a Torx bolt holding the button in. If its an aftermarket mirror, it will have either a Torx head or Phillips screw.
3Remove all the old adhesive from the mounting surface on the button using a flat razor, followed by the 1500-grit sandpaper. It is important to remove all remnants of adhesive without scratching the buttons mating surface. If the surface is scarred, the adhesive will not adhere properly. The button's surface must be perfectly smooth.
4Rub the mounting button mating surface with alcohol and a clean rag. Mark the side of the button opposite the mounting surface side. Prepare for installation by holding the button with the round tapered end up and the marked side with a dimple in the center of the button facing out. It is important to install the button properly, because it looks approximately the same on both sides of the button. However, the mirror will not mount to the button if the button has the wrong side out. The button cant be removed once it touches the windshield without destroying the windshield. Lay the button down, mounting-surface up, to keep it clean.
5Open the installation kit and withdraw the cylinder. Squeeze the cardboard-covered side of the cylinder in order to break the plastic. Remove the cardboard from the cylinder to expose a brush. Quickly brush the button mounting area thoroughly with the primer brush. Brush a 2-inch diameter area around the button-mounting surface. Allow this primer to dry for five minutes.
6Hold the mounting button by the sides without touching the mounting surface. Wipe the mounting surface with alcohol once more and allow 1 minute to dry. Take the adhesive tube out of the kit and twist the cap off.
7Hold the mounting button, making sure the tapered end is up and the smooth flat surface is up. Place one single drop of adhesive in the center of the buttons mounting surface. Immediately and carefully place the button on the outlined location on the windshield and apply pressure for 1 minute. Do not move the button once applied.
8Allow two hours to cure, to be on the safe side, before installing the mirror over the mounting button. It will cure at different rates depending on the current temperature. The mirror arm just slides over the side edges of the button and is tightened to prevent rattling by the bolt in the front of the button.
9Remove any excess adhesive with alcohol or the razor. Slide the mirror onto the button. Tighten the screw just enough to keep the mirror from sliding off of the button.
