How to Install an Ignition Coil on a 2000 Nissan Sentra

The Sentra -- one of Nissan's compact vehicles -- rolled into the U.S. marketplace for the 1985 model year. The 2000 model year brought about another redesign for the Sentra, giving the compact car it's most modern and stylish appearance. This model year had three trim levels: XE, GXE and SE. The XE and GXE trim levels came fitted with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and the SE had a 2.0-liter engine. The 1.8-liter engine used a distributorless ignition system that used four coil packs, one on each spark plug. Only one bolt secures each coil pack to the Sentra's engine, making replacement a straightforward task. The 2.0-liter engine had an electronic distributor, so it does not have an external coil to replace.

Instructions

    1

Remove the coil pack-retaining bolt -- located on top of the engine -- using a ratchet and socket.

    2

Press the locking button on the coil pack wiring harness and pull the harness from the coil pack. Pull the coil pack upward with a slight twisting motion to remove it.

    3

Coat the inside of the rubber boot on the base of the coil pack with dielectric grease. Set the coil pack onto the spark plug and press downward until you feel it click onto the spark plug.

    4

Plug the wiring harness into the top of the coil pack. Tighten the coil pack-retaining bolt to 2 to 4 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.

    5

Repeat for the remaining three coil packs.
