How to Change the Ignition Key Assembly on a 1992 F-250

When the key or tumblers in the key lock assembly on a 1992 Ford F-250 become worn, it is difficult to turn the key without manipulating it up and down. The key lock assembly must be replaced before it fails completely. Replacing the ignition key lock assembly is surprisingly simple, as long as the key turns. A new assembly will have a new key, which will not operate the doors. If you can see the numbers on the key, a locksmith can reset the new assembly to work with the original tumbler numbers and supply a new, but original, key.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative battery cable, using a wrench. Tip the steering column down, if it is a tilt column. Remove the steering column shroud by unsnapping the clip at the 9 oclock position and lifting the two halves off.

    2

Disconnect the electrical connector to the key warning switch just below the switch. Place the truck in park, if it is not already, and turn the ignition key to the Run position. Insert the 1/8-inch diameter drill bit in the casting hole beneath the key tumbler assembly. Push up on the drill bit to press the lock button up and simultaneously pull the key assembly out of the column.

    3

Install the new assembly by inserting the key and turning it to the Run position. Position the key so that the lock pin is on the bottom and push the assembly into the lower channel. Push up on the lock pin and push the assembly in as far as it will go until it is against the washer. Turn the key to the Off position to set the lock pin in the casting. Rotate the key to the "Start" and "Off" positions. Withdraw the key.

    4

Install the key warning electrical connector. Install the upper and lower column shroud and snap them together at the 9 oclock position. Connect the negative battery cable and tighten it with a wrench.
