How to Change a Headlight for a 2005 Saturn Vue

Saturn introduced its first SUV, the Vue, for the 2002 model year. The 2005 Vue came standard with a 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine that produced 143 horsepower; an optional 3.5-liter V-6 that churned out 250 horsepower was also available. The 2005 Vue took some of its styling cues from other models of Saturns, including the thin, rectangular headlight assemblies. Replacing the headlight is a task that requires few tools and not much time.

Instructions

    1

Open the Vue's hood and locate the retaining pin on the top of the side marker light. Pry up on the center of this pin, using a flat-head screwdriver, to unlock it and pry the pin from the side marker light.

    2

Lift up on the side marker to free it from the lower tabs and pull the side marker from the Vue. Twist the socket on the rear counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull the bulb and socket from the side marker assembly.

    3

Remove the two bolts securing the headlight assembly to the upper radiator support beam -- the metal bar spanning the top, front of the Vue's engine compartment -- using a ratchet and socket.

    4

Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the hole in the upper radiator support, directly behind the headlight assembly. Set the blade of the screwdriver on the locking tab behind the headlight assembly and push the locking tab toward the rear of the vehicle to disengage it.

    5

Hold the locking tab with the screwdriver and pull the headlight assembly up and out of the Vue. Grab the headlight socket of the burnt-out headlight and twist it counterclockwise to unlock it from the headlight assembly. Pull the headlight socket and bulb from the headlight assembly.

    6

Press the locking button on the headlight bulb socket and pull the headlight bulb from the socket. Grab the plastic base of a new 9006 headlight and push it into the socket until it snaps into place. Never touch the glass part of the bulb with your bare hands, as the oils from your hands may cause the bulb to fail prematurely.

    7

Insert the headlight socket into the rear of the headlight assembly, lining up the tabs on the socket with the notches in the headlight assembly. Turn the socket clockwise to lock it in place.

    8

Slide the headlight assembly into the front of the Vue until the tab on the rear snaps into place and the bolt holes on top line up with the bolt holes in the upper radiator support. Tighten the headlight assembly bolts to 7 to 8 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and socket.

    9

Insert the side marker bulb socket into the side marker light assembly and twist it clockwise to lock it in place.

    10

Press the side marker assembly into the front of the Vue and line up the holes on the bottom of the assembly with the locking tabs in the Vue's front fascia.

    11

Insert the retaining pin into the top of the side marker assembly and press the center of the pin downward to lock it in place.

    12

    Close the Vue's hood.
