On a 1998 GMC Pickup, the engine fan is mounted onto the water pump pulley. Although the fan turns with the engine, the fan clutch also controls how fast it spins, making sure that the radiator and engine are cooled properly at all times. When the clutch goes out, you'll need to replace it as soon as possible to ward against overheating. This isn't difficult to do, and can be done in under 15 minutes.
Instructions
- 1
Pop the hood and use the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket to remove the upper fan shroud from the core support. Lift it out of the way and set it to the side.
2Locate the four bolts that hold the fan to the water pump pulley, just behind the center of the fan. Hold one of the blades of the fan with one hand, then use an open-end wrench to remove the four bolts holding it in place.
3Lift the fan out of the engine compartment, being careful not to cut yourself on the fan blades, which can be sharp.
