In the mid-1990s, Dodges complete lineup of cars underwent a total modernization. One of these modernizing steps was to replace the aging Dodge Spirit with the new Stratus. The 2005 Dodge Stratus comes in two trim levels: SXT and R/T, both of which come as a coupe or sedan. A 147-horsepower, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine is standard in the base level SXT. This engine has an interesting ignition system that has two coil-on-plug coil packs, one on the No. 2 cylinder and one on the No. 4 cylinder; the other two cylinders plug into these coil packs. Despite its unusual nature, installing a coil in the 2005 Stratus with a 2.4-liter engine is a straightforward task.

3Pull the ignition wire the thick wire connecting the coil to the spark plug from the failed ignition coil using a slight twisting motion.
4Remove the bolt securing the coil to the engine using a ratchet and socket, and pull the coil upward with a slight twisting motion to remove it.

Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the new coils boot. Spread the dielectric grease around the inside of the boot with a small flat-head screwdriver.
6Align the coils boot with the top of the spark plug and press the coil downward until you feel it click into place.
7Thread the coils retaining bolt by hand, then torque it to between 70 and 104 inch-pounds with an inch-pound torque wrench.
8Plug the ignition wire into its receptacle on the side of the coil until you feel it click into place. Plug the wiring harness into the receptacle on the new ignition coil.
