Jaguar XJ220 - The First Epoch-making Supercar of the Modern Era

The Jaguar XJ220 is one of Jaguar's mid-engine sports cars produced between 1992 and 1994. The car was produced by Tom Walkinshaw Racing and Jaguar as Jaguar Sport. It is one of the fastest cars Jaguar has ever built. The Jaguar XJ220 can easily be dubbed the first epoch-making supercar of the modern era.

The Jaguar XJ220 was first produced in 1992. It had a top speed of 349 km/h and became the world's fastest production car. The Jaguar XJ220 remained the fastest car in the world until the McLaren F1 was built in 1994.

The Jaguar XJ220 was actually a pet project of the then Jaguar's chief engineer Jim Randle and a team of co-workers. It came as a demonstrative concept and the engineers developed the vehicle for fun. It was debuted in the 1988 Birmingham Motor Show and received an overwhelming response. They created the car as an updated version of the XJ13 and included various engine and wheel innovations. Their target was to build a car that can exceed a top speed of 320 km/h.

The Jaguar XJ220 supercar features a Twin Turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine with 542 hp arranged in a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. It has a top speed of 349 km/h (217 mph) and an acceleration of 0-60 in 3.8 secs. Since the vehicle did not comply with American safety regulations, the Jaguar XJ220 was never sold in the United States and only 170 of the 265 finished examples of the model were actually sold.
