Ferrari has unveiled its car for the 2012 Formula 1 season, the F2012. The launch of the car was cancelled due to heavy snowfall in Maranello but Ferrari released the images on their website. The most distinctive part of the F2012 is its new nose, which unlike the 2011 car, isn’t tapered and has a step in it. Ferrari said that this ‘ugly nose’ design was necessitated because of the new FIA regulations which restrict the height of the nose.
Apart from the nose, the F2012, whose internal code is 663, gets a new mapping for the electronic engine management, revised suspension layouts and new exhaust pipe positioning. Relocation of some mechanical components and a new gearbox casing is responsible for the lower rear part of the car to be tapered and narrower, which Ferrari claims result in better aerodynamics than the outgoing model.
Pat Fry, the new technical director of Ferrari is being credited with bringing about these changes in the car. The 12 days of testing, which start in Jerez, Spain next week will see the F2012 in action with the first race slated to be on March 18 in Melbourne.
