Artificial Islands - 3 Amazing Garbage Islands in the World

You know about artificial islands. There are many amazing artificial islands made around the world. The Palm Islands of Dubai, in United Arab Emirates (UAE), are the world's largest artificial islands. They are frequently called the eighth wonder of the world. But how much do you know about garbage islands? Below are three amazing garbage islands in the world.

Great Pacific Garbage Patch in North Pacific Ocean

Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a gyre of marine debris in the central North Pacific Ocean. The patch is characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of pelagic plastics, chemical sludge and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch stretches for hundreds of miles across the North Pacific Ocean, forming a nebulous, floating junk yard on the high seas.

Chubu Centrair International Airport on a Garbage Island

Chubu Centrair International Airport

Chubu Centrair International Airport, also known as Central Japan International Airport, is an airport on an artificial island in Ise Bay, south of Nagoya, Japan. Its shores were partially constructed with natural rocks and sloped to aid sea life forms to set up colonies. During the construction a species of little tern occasionally came, so a part of it was selected and set aside to aid nesting. Chubu Centrair International Airport is classified as a first class airport and is the main international gateway for the Chubu region of Japan.

Thilafushi - A Beautiful Garbage Island  in Maldives

Thilafushi - A Garbage Island in Maldives

This is a man-made island named Thilafushi, located a few miles from Male, the capital city of Maldives. From a distance, it looks like an island paradise in the middle of Pacific Ocean. But, get closer and you will see that this artificial island is actually a dump. This island was a reef before but after reclaiming it with garbage and waste it has now become a big island used for industrial purposes. It contains thousands of tons of solid waste rife with toxic chemicals including mercury, cadmium, lead and asbestos.

Side note: I was very amused to see a visitor had come to the ultra luxury Dubai palm islands post by searching in Yahoo for "garbage islands in Dubai." I'm very thankful to whoever it was because a little bit of searching for that term shocked me with these interesting stuff about garbage islands. Who would have thought there is so much amazing things out there for even garbage islands! :-)
