An important part of car ownership is maintaining your vehicle, and an important system to maintain is your brakes. Failure to maintain this system can lead to injury or worse for you and others. Like most vehicles, the front brakes on the 1990 Honda Civic are disc brakes. With the right tools and knowledge, you can remove the brake pads yourself when they need to be changed.
Instructions
- 1
Park the Civic on a flat piece of ground. Make sure that the emergency brake is engaged, and the car is in "Park" if it has an automatic transmission or is in second gear if it has a standard transmission.
2Loosen the lug nuts on the front tires, but do not remove them.
3Jack up the front of the car, and place a jack stand underneath each side of the outer frame. Slowly lower the car onto the jack stands. If you're not sure where to use the jack and jack stands, consult your owner's manual.
4Remove the lug nuts, and take the front tires off of the car.
5Pinch the rubber brake hose carefully with a brake hose clamp to prevent brake fluid from leaking out when you remove the caliper.
6Loosen the mounting bolts from the brake caliper with an adjustable wrench, and remove them from the brake assembly.
7Lift the brake caliper off of the caliper mount.
8Slide the brake pads off of the caliper slides.
