While G-Ghana brought together a group of seasoned technology enthusiasts in Accra 2 weeks ago, the Google Kenya team gathered a new community of enthusiasts - 500 secondary school teachers - for a training session on Google technology tools to enhance teaching and learning. The initiative, called g|funze, was a full day workshop held in Nairobi on April 29th, in collaboration with the Kenya ICT Board, Teachers Service Commission Kenya and Kenya Institute of Education.
The day began with opening speeches by Mugo Kibati, Director General of Vision 2030, Prof George Godia, Education Secretary and Ory Okolloh, Google Africa’s Policy Manager, inspiring the audience of teachers to take a forward-thinking and ICT-inclusive approach to teaching.
The rest of the day focused on how to apply Google Tools, in particular Google Search, Google Apps and Google Earth to teacher lesson planning and classroom learning. Popular use-cases included how the rich visual imagery in Google Earth can bring geography to life and how Google Search can be used to find and read news archives from over a century ago. The trainings were given by Google product experts from both California and Kenya.

g|funze ended with a closing speech by Dr. Bitange Ndemo, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT, who once again re-iterated the importance of integrating ICT tools into the education curriculum. The teachers enjoyed a final break to network and share stories, many of whom had not seen each other since their training days! They were eager to take back their learnings to their school communities and classrooms. We look forward to hearing how this goes and to continue furthering education through technology.

g|funze met en valeur la technologie pour l’enseignement au Kenya
Si le G-Ghana a réuni un groupe chevronné de mordus de la technologie à Accra il y a deux
semaines, l’équipe Google Kenya a regroupé une autre communauté de passionnés - 500 enseignants du secondaire - pour une session de formation sur les outils technologiques de Google afin d’améliorer l’enseignement et l’apprentissage. L’initiative, appelée g|funze, consistait en un atelier de travail d’une journée à Nairobi le 29 avril, en collaboration avec le Kenya ICT Board, Teachers Service Commission Kenya et le Kenya Institute of Education.
Celle-ci a démarré avec les discours d’inauguration de Mugo Kibati, directeur général de Vision 2030, du professeur George Godia, secrétaire à l’Éducation, et d’Ory Okolloh, responsable de la politique Google en Afrique, qui incitaient le public d’enseignants à adopter une approche plus tournée vers l’avenir, incluant les TIC.
Le reste de la journée a été consacré à la façon d’exploiter les outils, en particulier la
Recherche Google, Google Apps et Google Earth pour la planification des cours et l’enseignement en classe. Les utilisations les plus courantes qui ont été présentées sont la façon d’exploiter les images riches de Google Earth pour animer la géographie et la recherche Google pour trouver et consulter les archives des actualités depuis plus d’un siècle. Les formations étaient animées par des experts des produits Google à la fois de Californie et du Kenya.
g|funze s’est terminé par le discours de clôture du Dr. Bitange Ndemo, secrétaire permanent du ministère des technologies de l’information et de la communication, qui a souligné à nouveau l’importance d’intégrer les TIC aux programmes scolaires. Les enseignants ont profité de la pause en fin de journée pour nouer des contacts et échanger, la plupart d’entre eux ne s’étant pas rencontrés depuis leurs journées de formation! Ils avaient hâte de reprendre leurs cours dans leurs établissements scolaires et leurs classes. Nous attendons avec impatience des nouvelles de la suite de cette initiative et des améliorations apportées à l’enseignement via la technologie.
