As many of you in other countries already already know, we’ve created a way for you to carry on chatting with your friends via Gmail, even when they’re away from their computers. In the past few weeks we have added functionality to Gmail that allows users (worldwide) to chat over SMS with phone subscribers in Uganda (MTN, Uganda Telecom and Orange), Tanzania (Vodacom), and Malawi (Airtel, TNM).
These countries join other African countries for which this feature has been added in the past year - Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and Zambia - see full list here.
As a Gmail user, you can send SMSes to your friends for free, and when your friends reply, they will be charged the same as a regular SMS.
(Technical note: if you do not see the SMS interface in your Gmail, go to Settings->Labs and enable both labs that contain the word “SMS”)

Lancement des Gmail SMS en Ouganda, en Tanzanie et au Malawi
Comme beaucoup d’entre vous dans d’autres pays le savent déjà , nous avons créé un
moyen de « chatter » avec vos amis via Gmail, même lorsqu’ils ne sont pas à proximité des
leur ordinateur.Au cours des dernières semaines, nous avons ajouté une fonction à Gmail,
qui permet aux utilisateurs (du monde entier) de « chatter » via SMS avec des abonnés au
téléphone en Ouganda (MTN, Uganda Telecom et Orange), Tanzanie (Vodacom) et Malawi
(Airtel, TNM).
Ces pays rejoignent d’autres pays africains où cette fonction a été ajoutée l’année dernière –
le Kenya, le Nig̩ria, le S̩n̩gal, le Ghana et la Zambie Рvoir la liste compl̬te ici.
En tant qu’utilisateur Gmail, vous pouvez envoyer des SMS gratuitement à vos amis, et
lorsque ceux-ci répondent, ils paieront le tarif habituel d’un SMS normal.
(Remarque technique : Si l’interface SMS n’apparaît pas dans votre Gmail, allez sur
Paramètres->Labs et activez les deux labs dont la description contient le mot « SMS ».)
