The brake rotor in a Volkswagen is an integral part of the braking system. Hydraulic fluid is pushed through steel lines into a caliper mechanism. The caliper then pushes a brake pad using a piston against a brake rotor. The rotor turns with the drive axles and is connected with the drive wheels via the wheel hub assembly. Over time, the rotor may become scored or worn down due to the constant friction involved in braking. You should periodically check your Volkswagen's rotors for score marks. Break the lug nuts loose on the front wheels of the Volkswagen by turning them counterclockwise with a tire wrench 1/4 turn.
2Place the floor jack under the front jack point and jack up on the Volkswagen.
3Place jack stands under the front pinch welds of the vehicle and lower the Volkswagen onto the stands.
4Continue to remove the lug nuts and then pull the wheels off the wheel hub.
5Unbolt the bolts holding the caliper to the caliper mounting bracket.
6Lift the caliper off the rotor and secure it with zip ties to the coil springs above the brake assembly.
7Pull the rotor straight off the hub assembly.
