If you are like most people you don’t have the time to have the car checked out before buying it. Most car lots have at least a thirty day warranty on the cars and trucks they sell. Having the car checked out is still an option that you have. The first thing you should check on is the, “the lemon law” in your state. This is just in case you run into a major problem with your newly bought used car.
What I would do next is to take a couple long road trips in the car or truck you just bought. Notice everything that you experienced on your road trips and write them down. You would want to notice things like how the car drives and how it feels going over bumps. Monitor how the steering wheel and remember how it feels while braking and turning corners. Also see how the brakes feel to you at high and low speeds. Keep in mind that brake repairs can be very costly.
Notice any irregular noises such as the engine and the transmission noises. Make sure that when you first start the car up in the morning there are no internal engine noises. These type of notices can lead to expensive repairs later on down the road. One more thing to check when starting the car up, notice if you see any smoke coming out of your tail pipe. This could mean that you have leaking valve guide seals which again can lead to costly repairs.
And finally have the car or truck inspected by an ASE certified technician. Have him or her give the car a good looking over and have them write down what ever they find. Take your notes and the technicians report and revisit your used car lot. He may refund some of the money involved in getting the car fixed up for you. This will also save you some head aches later down the road if you have to take the car lot guy to court.
Look for leaks of any kind after your road trips. Look underneath your car for transmission or engine oil leaks. These leaks will start small and will get worse over time. Other leaks to look for would be the radiator and your power steering fluid.
So as you can see you still have time to check the car or truck you just bought and return it to the car lot guy within the thirty day limit. The lemon law can be found at, “car lemon .com.“
