Man! I think Hip Hop dies slowly... I needed about a month to find a new artist I like. Matter of fact their are two. I knew Pete Rock a long time ago- since he dropped "My Own Worst Enemy" with Edo G. But then I stumbled over Cl Smooth which released three albums with Pete Rock before they split in 1995, because they wanted to start their solo carrier. Three years after the split Pete had his first solo success with "Soul Survivor". Then he produced constantly new albums till his last in 2008 ("NY's Finest" ). But he hasn't layed down his mic yet; he talked about collabo projects with Tha Dogg Pound, Camp Lo and others. He also pronounced another album with Cl Smooth.
By mentioning his name, his solo carries wasn't as good as Pete Rock's. He needed more then ten years before he dropped "American Me", which is a pretty good album because it has not the modern influence in it and sounds like earlier projects with Pete Rock. A year later Cl released his second album "The Outsider", that definitely goes in the modern direction.
The productions before each of them started their solo carriers are just great. The first album "All Souled Out" was a try but still fine. They reached their break-through with "Mecca and the Soul Brother", which reached the top 10 in the RnB/Hip Hop Charts. The duo got famous with the singles "T.R.O.Y." and "Straighten It Out". Two years later their last album "The Main Ingredient" appeared and ended their relationship till today.
All in all you can say that someone who is sick of the modern stuff can fall in love with hip hop again when he/she buys the presented albums.
